About Malta

The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta being 93km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of approximately 480,000 inhabitants over an area of 372km² (inclusive of Malta & Gozo).

Valletta, is Malta’s capital city: a living, working city, the administrative and commercial heart of the Islands. Valletta is named after its founder, the respected Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Jean de la Vallette. Started in 1566, Valletta was completed, with its impressive bastions, forts and cathedral, in the astonishingly short time of fifteen years.

Malta is a member in the Commonwealth of Nations and in fact the Health, Educational, Political, and Civil Service systems are very similar to that of the UK. Malta is a member of the United Nations (since 1964) and Malta had become a completely independent state in 1974.  The Republic of Malta become a member of the European Union in 2004 and since 2007, Malta has also become part of the Schengen Agreement. Further-more in 2008, Malta adopted the EURO currency, and is thus subject to all the respective rules and regulations.

Due to our climate, Malta has become a major tourist destination in the heart of the Mediterranean. The total annual rainfall being 50cm with an average Winter temperature of 13 °C and Summer highs of nearly 40°C. In essence, Malta has 2 seasons which includes the mild Winter season and a long dry Summer season.

Being a full member of the European Union, Malta employs the Mutual Recognition Procedure whereby once any one-member state has been granted marketing authorisation by any local EU competent authority, this shall be held in common with other member states.
